Forward New Orleans, a broad coalition of 26 civic, neighborhood and community organizations, has released its latest platform ahead of the October Mayoral and City Council elections. The platform, a framework of nonpartisan objectives developed as a tool to help set an agenda for elected officials, identifies six major issues facing New Orleanians: public safety, infrastructure, economic opportunity, city services, city finance and the civil service system.
The platform goes further by identifying well-researched, specific action items for each issue. Before the election, Forward New Orleans will publish a scorecard that shows each candidate’s willingness, or lack thereof, to align on each issue, based on individual candidate interviews.
“Through this platform, our coalition has laid the foundation to tackle the most fundamental issues that matter most to our community.” said Gregory Rusovich, Past Chair of the Business Council of New Orleans and the River Region and a Forward New Orleans coalition representative.
“It is our responsibility as citizens to hold our elected officials accountable and demand action that will continue to move New Orleans forward. By interviewing candidates and seeking their support for the coalition’s studied positions on these issues, it is our expectation that those who are elected will abide by the commitments and do what is right for the city, and not just those things that are politically expedient.”
Forward New Orleans coalition partners include: the Algiers Economic Development Foundation, Business Council of New Orleans and the River Region, Citizens for 1 Greater New Orleans, Committee for a Better New Orleans, Common Good, Court Watch NOLA, Crimestoppers, Greater New Orleans Foundation, Greater New Orleans Hotel & Lodging Association, Greater New Orleans Housing Alliance, GNO, Inc., Louisiana Associated General Contractors, Metropolitan Crime Commission, Inc., New Orleans Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, New Orleans Chamber of Commerce, New Orleans Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau, New Orleans Crime Coalition, New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation, New Orleans Regional Black Chamber of Commerce, RIDE New Orleans, Stand for Children, Urban League of Louisiana, Vieux Carre Property Owners, Residents, and Associates, Water Collaboration of Greater New Orleans, Young Leadership Council and Youth Empowerment Project.
